James joined Troop 17 in the fall of 1995 and has been an active Seventeener ever since. 

James’s first leadership position was as a Den Chief for Pack 489 at Conway School and earned him the Troop’s Cub Service Award.

After attending the Council’s Junior Leader Training Camp and serving as an Assistant Patrol Leader, James became the Patrol Leader of the Eagle Patrol. During his 16-month tenure, he lead his patrol to a third place overall finish at the Pathfinder District Camporee in 1999. 

In his climb up the trail to Eagle, James’ optional merit badges have shown an active outdoor flavor: Canoeing, Cooking, Wilderness Survival, Pioneering, Rifle Shooting, and Geology, for example. 

His outdoor interests and six years at the Troop’s annual summer camp culminated with his participation in the Troop’s 2000 trip to Philmont Scout Ranch, Scouting’s high adventure camp in the mountains of New Mexico. 

James has earned the Honor Camper award twice and also held the Field Service and Attendance ribbons. He also completed the mile swim and in 1999 James was elected to the Order of the Arrow. He wears the Troop Leadership Cocade – emblematic of his leadership and service to the troop and is a member of the Bakers – Troop Seventeen’s unique organization for older scouts. 

For his Eagle service project, James led the effort to clean up and improve the Irvzeied Community Park in Olivette. 

In school, James participated in many clubs and activities, such as the Bicycle Club and Stock Market Club. He played tenor saxophone in the school band and competed in the Science Olympiad in trajectory which was part of the team which won the state Olympiad. 

In sports, James lettered in varsity wrestling for three years on the Ladue conference and district championship team. He also lettered three years in both JV and varsity football on teams which also were conference and district championship teams. 

Throughout high school, James held a job and even owned and operated a small landscaping company. 

James, who was a 3.0 GPA honor roll student, graduated a semester early from high school with plans for college.
